The original request here was for a logical NOT operator, although it doesn’t make sense to create a logical NOT operator in Locale. Most of the time, NOT isn’t the right way of thinking about a Condition. For example, NOT 9 am to 5 pm could be redefined as 5pm to 9am. NOT at work would simply be the Default situation. For the other conditions built-in to Locale, thinking about the problem in a different way usually means that NOT isn’t needed. If a Condition truly needs NOT logic, then that should probably be put into the individual Condition’s UI itself rather than as part of the Edit Situation screen in Locale.

Although this request is for a NOT operator, I believe the underlying request here is a way of detecting the transition between situations. The strongest use case would be detecting when you’ve left a particular Location. While Locale… more

Android 2.0 finally adds APIs that would allow apps like Locale to implement a “Bluetooth Condition.” If this were implemented, it would only be available on Android 2.0 phones.

Update: There are some Android bugs that will prevent this from being implemented for the time being. Specifically, we’ve found that Bluetooth will periodically crap out until the phone is rebooted.

        • Different icons for location notification

I I could select say a different coloured marker for each notification, and these would show up on the nitification bar, then I would instantly see what situation I am in without having to drag the notification list.

          • delayed conditions

Astrid supports Locale, so the obvious thing one might do is to trigger reminders when you, say, come home.

However, getting reminded the moment you walk in the door (or more likely, when you're near your home) isn't always useful. You might just be dropping off your bag.

So, a location condition that waits a configurable timespan, and then checks if it's still valid before firing off the actions would be handy. Some of the other conditions might also benefit (say, "if I'm *still* on the phone with mom after 30 minutes, then..."), while it would be rather useless for… more

This is a great idea and we’ve been looking at it for quite a while. I agree it could be quite useful when combined with Astrid integration. For example, a location-aware reminder would be really useful a few minutes after arrival, rather than right when walking in the door.

A key requirement would be that the delay should be very consistent and predictable. For example, if I ask for a reminder 30 minutes after I get home, it should always be exactly 30 minutes after I get home. Thanks to Locale 2.0’s instant location, we are now be able to meet this requirement.

I have a few open questions about this as we go forward with investigating how this might work:

              - Should there be delayed conditions? Or should this be implemented as delayed settings? (The end result would be the same, but each requires a different mental model) -… more
            • Speed Condition

A condition to detect the current speed the phone is moving.

This could be used to detect when the phone is moving by a vehicle, such as when the user is driving.

Calling this a true “driving” condition would be a misnomer, as a number of other factors would actually be used to guess that the user was driving. This request would simply detect the speed at which the phone is moving.

There are two ways currently to detect when the phone is in a car: a car dock condition or a Bluetooth condition, both of which are available now as plug-ins on the Android Market.

We’ve been investigating an implementation for a “speed” condition, and we’re confident we can create a reliable and low-power consumption implementation. There are just a number of considerations to take into account before doing so. After reading all of the comments, it appears that there are several different goals that users have in mind. Let’s look at a few of them:

                1. Power savings: some users want to enable Bluetooth in the car and disable Bluetooth… more

              • create a "polite" mode that allows for receiving conditions from external sources!

I wonder how feasible this is, of course. But it would be very futuristic of you to have a mode in which your phone configures its settings (with user permission, of course) to match the "configuration" of a place.

Imagine not having to worry about turning your phone off at the theater (or whether other people did!), because the theater itself broadcasts a polite "please shut off your ringtones" signal to anyone who's opted into it.

I know that the type of person who's willing to "opt-in" to polite mode style phone settings are also the type of people who… more

The necessary APIs to detect a Bluetooth headset being connected were added in Android 3.0/Honeycomb.

We’re looking into supporting Bluetooth headphones with the Headphones condition, however this feature will require Android 3.0 or later.

                    • Count missed calls as a condition

When I'm at work, Locale sets my phone to silent. If it's in my pocket and I don't notice the vibration, it's no big deal, because I'm at work. But what if someone really needs to get in contact with me? After the fifth missed call with my phone in my pocket, I would really prefer Locale to swap "Silent" for "10% ringer volume". After the sixth, 20%, and so on.

It could also be used to crossover with the Gchat and Auto-sms plugins - After n missed calls, put up a status on google chat "Sorry to whoever's trying… more

                      • Ambient Sound Condition

A condition to detect ambient average decible level would be useful to auto-mute in exceptionally quiet or exceptionally loud places.

The condition settings should display the current ambient decible level for reference, and have a couple lines indicating average road noise, threshold of pain, etc.

The user would be allowed to set boundaries with two sliders, and a minimum duration integer. If the ambient decible level stays within the range set, for at least as many minutes as the duration specifies, the condition is matched.

Apps cannot immediately detect when GPS is enabled in the Android settings. There would have to be about a 10 minute delay, which I don’t think would be acceptable in this particular case. (There just aren’t any facilities in Android for such notification)

Apps can detect Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Airplane mode being changed instantly.

                          • Create calendar alarms based on distance from "objective"

For example, say I'm at home and am 30 minutes away from work. I have a meeting at, say, 2:00. A reminder for travel distance plus a buffer would be nice- if I'm 30 minutes from work, have a reminder trigger 40 minutes before an event. If I'm already at work, have the alarm trigger 10 minutes before an event. I know Locale doesn't really do "alarms" but perhaps a text message (to myself) to remind me of something.

We’re investigating whether an Alarm volume setting makes sense.

Although a 3rd party developer has implemented the “Locale AllVolumes Plug-in” we strongly discourage using this plug-in because it is extremely buggy. This plug-in may appear to work correctly, but will actually fail in many circumstances. For example: it does not set ringer or notification volumes correctly and may cause the ringer or notifications to go off unexpectedly, it does not correctly perform backup and restore across different devices, and may set all volumes to the incorrect level.

OK, so it's not that easy to detect if one's phone is in one's pocket, but it would be an awesome condition to incorporate...

The face up / face down condition is great, but it means you have to take the phone out of your pocket to use it. I'm probably not the only one here who would agree that when the phone's in your pocket, turning off bluetooth and switching ring to vibrate would be ideal.

This could either be done using the proximity or light sensor, or more simply achieved by turning the face up / face down… more

                                  • add a condition to detect gateway mac address, or lan-local ping/httpget

This does something not possible with gps, or AP or essid detection.

There may be many APs within an organization. Detecting presence within the organization therefore may require knowing every AP's mac address and/or essid as that would not be feasable.

What you could depend on however, is the presence of a specific host (by ip or hostname) that is able to reply to pings or http gets. you would use a host on your internal lan, by its internal IP address, and if the http get included [companyname] or other text that would normally appear on that internal only… more

                                      Edit: Reopening per billycrook’s feedback.

I still believe much of the underlying goal is implemented by the Locale Wifi Connection plug-in available for free on the Android Market.

We’re investigating whether a Voice call volume setting makes sense.

                                        • Variable information manipulation

It would be great to be able to add a feature to accept info in the condition, and be able to pass it to the settings.

For example, if someone has "Joe Smith's Birthday" in his calendar, and Locale reads that day in the calendar, it would be cool to be able to send out an SMS to Joe Smith for his Birthday.

Another example, if you receive a text from someone (say Joe Smith), you want to post a twitter response regarding "Joe Smith".

These are simple examples, but the usefulness just quadruples with this capability

I can think of a handful of obvious solutions, but I'm sure there are innovative ways of using Locale that might not occur to all of us. How about a user-submitted web-page (formatted for easy viewing on a handset) that lists various configurations and how they are helpful
