Active app detection

Change setting when specific app is running in the foreground. Would allow turning on GPS only when you run maps or maybe adjust volume and brightness on a game.

There is a third party plug-in that accomplishes this. The “Locale Plug-in Appli Detection” is available on the Android Market in all countries that support paid apps.

For example, when I open up the music player, turn media volume up full blast. When I exit the music player, turn media volume back down.

@spookymonster: We usually give developers a chance to investigate issues before we re-evaluate. Often such bug reports are specific to a particular version of Android, a particular device, etc.

Although I haven't had any issues with this specific plug-in, I'd recommend following up with the plug-in developer first because I'm sure he'll be glad to help.

Understood. However, I was trying to point out that the third-party solution does not satisfy the specifics of this enhancement request (_Active_ app detection). Given that this is not a free plugin, and the flaw only becomes apparent after purchasing it, pulling its recommendation would seem prudent for the Locale developers.

I will also follow up with the plugin developer for a fix. Should they be able to resolve this issue, I would heartily agree with its recommendation as a fix to this enhancement request.

@spookymonster: This is a third party plug-in, which means we didn't develop it. For support with third party plug-ins, we recommend contacting the plug-in developer directly. Contact information can be found on the Android Market screen for that plug-in.

Appli detection does not detect apps moving from active to background. It only detects the first time an app is activated. So you can start up GPS when Navigation starts the first time, but it'll never start GPS again after that until the phone gets restarted.

This is now available with the "Locale Plug-in Appli Detection" app available in the Market. Haven't tested it myself but it seems to be up this alley.

I desperately want this so I can set a situation to not turn off the display when Pandora (or any other music player) is running when plugged in (usually in my car - so I don't have to fumble for my phone to see what song is playing).

I use TasKiller to kill things I'm not using, so just change it from FOREGROUND to RUNNING AT ALL and I think it would work

This would be a great addition to Locale. It would allow us to disable the screen timeout when certain apps were running. Nothing drives me more crazy than having to unlock my phone every minute when all I want it to do is stay on.

I think that this would be a great addition. If I am at home and open the browser, turn on wifi. If I open a navigation program, enable gps. Ideally the condition could distinguish between app open and app active (foreground). This would also require a close/background condition.

A condition like this would allow me to read ebooks in peace. I'd love to hide non-urgent notifications like email and sms while the ebook reader is in the foreground.

I think this would be very useful. For example, if Google Maps is running in the foreground, and I'm plugged in and charging, I can disable the screen timeout.

I think it would be better to check weather is an app is running better than just if it's in foreground...

      • Michael JohnsonMichael Johnson commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

This is only possible by constantly polling Android to see what apps are running. Would be extremely energy and processor consuming...

As it relates to GPS, there have been numerous posts official and otherwise that specifically state you can leave the GPS on permanently. It does not use your battery unless a program is actually accessing the radio signal.

So, leave your GPS on all the time!
