I suggest you ...

Extend the orientation conditions to support standing up (vertical orientation)

currently the orientation conditions are "face up" or "face down".

I'd quite like a condition for when the phone is standing up vertically. This would help when using it in the car as a sat-nav unit.

Completely vertical is a difficult position for a user to achieve. Face up and face down are easy, because the phone is just placed flat on a table.

For the real underlying request for detecting when the phone is in a car, I think the best solution is a car dock for Android 2.0 devices. (This might require buying a new phone like the Droid or Nexus One :).

Can we revisit this one... It would be great to use something like this so Locale detects when it's in my pocket (i.e. vertical)... There would be 1000 things I could use such a condition for...

an orientation condition would be completely useless to detect if the phone is in the car, as the phone's g-sensors are affected by acceleration and turning... you'd find every time you turned a corner or accelerated/stopped that the condition would be lost.

Calibrate the orientation of the phone in the pos. X and use it as situation cond. Hope this is useful for car use.
