UPDATE:
Locale 1.4 includes significant improvements to the location detection system, reducing time to detect location changes by 20% while also improving battery usage by up to 50%.
The original goal of this request—reducing the delay of detecting location changes—has been met as Locale 1.4 detects location changes within an average of 4 minutes. We are therefore marking this request as completed.
Although this request is being marked as completed, we have ongoing research and development to keep improving the speed and efficiency of the location detection system further :).
(Original response)
By design, Locale has no user-configurable options. The goal is that Locale should “just work” without requiring users to fiddle with various options that could negatively impact the operation of the app. For example, asking Locale to check location every minute could cause the battery to drain within 2 hours at which point you might miss the… more

This would be a good work-around for the lack of ability to change GPS settings. This way you could set Locale to not check your location during sleeping time or when your battery is getting low.

Given that this is a hack for specific devices that lack an ambient lighting sensor (e.g. G1, Tattoo, and a few others), this feature doesn’t make sense at this time.
The good news is that Locale 1.0 is compatible with phones that have an ambient lighting sensor built in (such as the Droid, Nexus One, etc.)
There is also the possibility that a 3rd party developer will create this feature as a plug-in condition for Locale 1.0.

This really seems like a very smart idea, but wouldn’t it slow down the phone in the first few seconds?
Also, I think Locale already knows an On Unlock feature, because I notice that my GPS always becomes active when my phone is turned on.

Why does it still keep checking location when you have turned all of your conditions with locations off? When you select to disable locations and you select that for all location based conditions, then it shouldn’t check location.
It would be nice to just turn it off entirely as a setting. That way you can just turn it off at night for example.

This is a very welcome option now that Locale can not change the GPS settings anymore. This is also useful at night, because I already have a sleeping profile (although it would be cool in combination with ‘Not on conditions’ to post a twitter update saying SCORE!!! when I am not at home during sleeping hours ;) )

The original request here was for a logical NOT operator, although it doesn’t make sense to create a logical NOT operator in Locale. Most of the time, NOT isn’t the right way of thinking about a Condition. For example, NOT 9 am to 5 pm could be redefined as 5pm to 9am. NOT at work would simply be the Default situation. For the other conditions built-in to Locale, thinking about the problem in a different way usually means that NOT isn’t needed. If a Condition truly needs NOT logic, then that should probably be put into the individual Condition’s UI itself rather than as part of the Edit Situation screen in Locale.
Although this request is for a NOT operator, I believe the underlying request here is a way of detecting the transition between situations. The strongest use case would be detecting when you’ve left a particular Location. While Locale… more

Perhaps similar to the interface with the network settings (add a button where you can select for the condition to go ‘on’ or ’off’’), but then next to the condition.

This is also good if you use your Calendar a lot and are using Locale in combination with Astrid. That way you can get a notice when you have “Spare time”.

This is now supported in Locale 1.0. To add multiple conditions of the same type, simply long-press on the Add Condition button.
Locale 1.0 is available on the Android Market today in countries that support paid apps. Full release notes are here: http://www.twofortyfouram.com/notes.html

Locale 1.0 adds a new condition: the Orientation condition. The orientation condition supports detecting when the phone is lying face up or face down.

There are already a few apps that do exactly this, but it would be good if Locale has this as a codition. Phone upside down = turn off everything consuming battery life for example.

A new version of this plug-in was released today which offers Android 1.6 (Donut) compatibility.

Damn, this is just such an important feature. If you set this to turn off autosynch at night and when below 30%, then you can easily get half a day more out of your battery…

I have thought of another use for auto-synch, but I am not sure if it is possible. If you could enable parts of the synching options (calendar and contacts) to only synch when the phone is plugged in (which is at least once a day) and not when it is unplugged, then that can probably save some battery as well.

Another reason you would want this is when your battery is running low. We buy smartphones to stay connected, but when my battery drops below 15% I just want to be able to recieve calls and can do without Emails for a while. Most of us use the “battery below” function already for disabling WiFi and GPS and this would be like that.

I agree. Also it can safe batterylife. When I am at school, I use the calendar to let Locale know my condition. Then having it synch once an hour would really save battery-life compared to the 3 second refreshing that it does now, especially considering I shouldn’t be checking my mail while in class anyway ;)
This is also handy if the condition “NOT” or “Leaving” was implemented.

This is implemented with Astrid, which contains a plug-in for Locale!

Very good stuff! I tried it out this morning and it is exactly what I want from a geo-aware todo-list. It’s still wastefull that there is a second app watching my calendar and time, but fortunately Astrid isn’t a battery-hogging app.
People, to add this. Install Astrid and create a tag (for example, for tasks you need to do at home, work, etc.), then go to Locale with the corresponding location and under settings, choose astrid and the specified tag.
I instantly added a new condition for shopping with a lot of locations for malls. Then when I need something that I can get at basically any mall, I’ll get an alert for Astrid.Good stuff!

As far as I know, Geolife is permanently post-poned, due to the developpers pursuing other goals.
Secondly, it is better to have as few apps as possible pulsing your location in order to save battery life.
