The original request here was for a logical NOT operator, although it doesn’t make sense to create a logical NOT operator in Locale. Most of the time, NOT isn’t the right way of thinking about a Condition. For example, NOT 9 am to 5 pm could be redefined as 5pm to 9am. NOT at work would simply be the Default situation. For the other conditions built-in to Locale, thinking about the problem in a different way usually means that NOT isn’t needed. If a Condition truly needs NOT logic, then that should probably be put into the individual Condition’s UI itself rather than as part of the Edit Situation screen in Locale.

Although this request is for a NOT operator, I believe the underlying request here is a way of detecting the transition between situations. The strongest use case would be detecting when you’ve left a particular Location. While Locale… more

How about working with DroidMunkey and supporting their work to make this possible? There are a bunch of hurdles that are native to Locale that make setting these up tedious, and not intuitive. I think a partnership endeavor would be effective, and I think they’d love it.

Yay! I’m so glad this is in the hopper! This just makes sense.

I need to prioritize my mute settings, for example, where BT is just wasting battery, but I drive a Subaru, and they are notoriously loud. I’d really like to avoid yet another Situation just to handle something like this. I also don’t want my BT to turn on, say, if I’ve left my headset in the car, and I need to make a call when I’m in the bathroom to avoid a tedious meeting.

          UPDATE:

Locale 1.4 includes significant improvements to the location detection system, reducing time to detect location changes by 20% while also improving battery usage by up to 50%.

The original goal of this request—reducing the delay of detecting location changes—has been met as Locale 1.4 detects location changes within an average of 4 minutes. We are therefore marking this request as completed.

Although this request is being marked as completed, we have ongoing research and development to keep improving the speed and efficiency of the location detection system further :).

          (Original response)

By design, Locale has no user-configurable options. The goal is that Locale should “just work” without requiring users to fiddle with various options that could negatively impact the operation of the app. For example, asking Locale to check location every minute could cause the battery to drain within 2 hours at which point you might miss the… more

If Locale can’t determine your location, it assumes that you’re still at the same location you were last at.

What you describe would only happen if there is extremely bad location data in your area. E.g. cell tower locations place you completely outside of the location you defined (e.g. no overlap of the circles at all). Once Google told me I was in New Jersey, when I was actually in Boston. Given such terrible data, there’s really nothing Locale can do.

You can disable Google’s location service, which might improve your accuracy. This is the “Use Wireless Networks” under the Android location settings. Turning this off may increase or decrease battery usage, depending on your environment.

            janiskfpjaniskfp commented  ·

By the way, Google Maps, Browser, Car Locator, Sherpa, Layar, Waze, Hoccer, GPS status, iMap Weather, even Weather Forecast Widget can find my accurate location is less than 30 seconds, usually about 3-5 seconds, while Locale is still hanging on to lower-priority Situations and not enabling the Situation that is associated with my current location, sometimes for up to about 8 or so minutes, even when I disable and re-enable Locale. I don’t really have the need for faster switching than that, but I have had a heck of a time understanding why that happens like it does. I always have my GPS enabled unless my battery is less than 15% just because I want as accurate and fast a location as I can get, and the battery charge is worth it to me. Is there anything I can do, besides maybe disabling “Use wireless Networks” to improve the speed of location-dependent Situations?

            janiskfpjaniskfp commented  ·

            I guess I wasn’t clear.

I’m not talking necessarily about location, I was addressing the behavior of Situation switching. What happens on my phone is that between most switches, via time, the calendar plugin, shake, or whatever, the Default Situation becomes enabled first (and only), then after that the new applicable Situation (or the current Situation, if that’s what’s fits).

I was wondering if there could be a 30-60 second delay (maybe as an option) to release the current Situation while the new one is being activated, then after that release the former Siuation when the new one is actually Active.

Android treats memory differently than a desktop computer. When leaving an app, it is paused rather than killed, so that so that returning to it later is faster. If Android needs more memory, it will automatically close apps that have been paused but have not been used recently. Because Android manages memory automatically, “task killer” apps are not necessary. Google has blocked “task killer” apps for Android 2.2 and later.

While it is not possible to “kill” apps on Android, the Shortcut plug-in can be used to simulate this behavior by bringing the Android Home screen to the foreground. To do this, simply create a new Shortcut setting, choose Menu → Filter → All. Pick the “Launcher” app. When the setting is fired, it will bring the Home screen to the foreground, pausing whatever application was previously on the screen.

I would just like an app or service I have running to stop when a Situation is over. It makes sense, like Waze or BTCall shut off when your Car Situation is off, without killing all the other apps or services, or Kill Always Prompt service once you leave home.

Same difference, but I agree, this would be a killer plug-in, so to speak.

Locale offers contextual built-in help in every screen of the app. In addition, we document known issues with various handsets on our website at www.twofortyfouram.com/support.html . We’ve tried to keep the Help and concise as possible, as users are going to be reading it on their mobile phone.

                  I think the biggest limitation
of the built-in help is that you can’t read all of the documentation in one place, as you have to launch the Help from every screen. But that was a design decision to keep the Help information organized in a comprehensible way for a mobile user.

Is there a specific area of the built-in help that you’ve found to be insufficient? If so, please contact support and we’ll address it.

I’ll also add that many users confuse requests for documentation with requests for implementation details. (E.g. how exactly does the location condition work? When does it decide… more

WSS renders wallpapers like they’re supposed to be. Really, they’re beautiful. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s simple. Best yet, it’s bug free. The native Wallpaper business is to complex and interconnected, and of course, doesn’t play nice with Locale.
WSS really is a fantastic replacement.

I use wallpapers to indicate Situation, and it’s great, when it works, and if I don’t mind relativley poorly rendered graphics.

It can also float from portrait to landscape.

This is now supported in Locale 1.0:

The Display setting has been broken down into individual Brightness and Screen Timeout settings.

Likewise, the Network setting has been broken down into individual Bluetooth and Wi-Fi settings.

The Volume setting cannot be broken down, due to limitations in Android regarding how Ringer and Notification volumes are controlled. Separating them in Locale would cause LOTS of problems.

Locale 1.0 is available on the Android Market today in countries that support paid apps. Full release notes are here: http://www.twofortyfouram.com/notes.html

Locale 1.0 offers the ability to have multiple conditions of the same type (an implicit OR operator). This would satisfy Jim’s requirements.

                          Marking as completed.

(Jim: I’ll note that there is a small bug in 1.0 that affects multiple time conditions with different days of week. It should be fixed in a 1.0.1 update later this week.)

I agree. I think maybe having and Advanced Settings kind of thing to set different times for each weekday might work, e.g. a new window in which the days each have thier own time picker, or a longpress on the weekday tobring up its own time-picker might work. Just some ideas. You’ve probably already thought of them, though.

I’d really prefer to keep my phone settings out of my calendar, particularly since I’ve specified that some people can see my calendar, and they’re exactly the people I don’t want seeing what my phone is doing.

I get up dad-blasted early on Sundays, and need my phone to be on and loud, but Saturdays are another story…. Also, when my daughter is with me on weeknights, I pretty much mute my phone, but at those same times on weekends, she gives me a good night call that I dearly don’t want to miss. The dozen profiles I have up are getting a bit laggy.

After discussing this with Google, it is clear that third party apps will not be given access to modify the home screen.

Adding and removing widgets on the home screen is only something that the Android OS itself is allowed to do.

How about a widget that shows a user-selected icon depending on profile? Not just having it disappear, but having it show which profile is active. Also, it would be handy if the widget would bring up a list of profiles (the user-selected icons) to manually chose profile & lock it in place 1.for a user-selected amount of time, or 2. until a user-defined condition change, e.g. could be location, scheduled, calendar, sms trigger….

This isn’t original I have to give credit to Bruce and the PhoneAlarm forum.

This is implemented by the Locale Button Plug-in, which can be found on the Android Market by choosing “Get Plug-ins” from the menu of the Locale home screen.

Like Ryanryo88 (I suspect) , I have two profiles/Situations at the top of my list, one named “metting” that basically shuts everything off, including sound & vibration, as if I’m in a meeting and pretty much not using my phone. Then above that, one named “vibrate,” and all it does is set volume to 0 and turn on vibration. I could, if I wanted to be thorough, have a third named “mute” that only mutes the sound.

I can use one or both, depending on whether or not I want just the sound off, or if I really want everything off. I have the schedule set from 12:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., since not having anything in the conditions has been unreliable for me in the past.

I have a Home shortcut for Locale, and just enable them when I want them. It’s a two-click process. I’m having a hard time seeing how this isn’t “manual mode.” It really is entirely manual, though, and I won’t get my sound back until I shut the Situation off.

I’m all for some kind of timer on these.

Go see the PhoneAlarm website at pocketmax.net. There’s an option to lock a profile indefinitely, for a set amount of time, or until the next profile change (only overriding the current profile). If location detection and Locale were reliable enough, we could do set&forget, but we can’t. I dunno about everyone else, but I am constantly tweaking, and ending up in my default settings anyway.

For NOT: create the Situation that IS for the same/overlapping schedule that is NOT. eg, 8am-5 pm if at work (assign location) then …. situation=work. 8am-5pm not at work, then no location assigned, then situation=not at work.

I figured it out when my daughter colored in a blue sky behind a bird she wanted to be white. Fill in the negative space.

                                      How about something like:
-1st choose Situation to lock in (set settings and essentially supress Locale),
-2nd choose duration, e.g. specified length of time (to infinite/manual change) & leave it at that, or
                                      - 3rd choose: until (a) specified profile(s) is(are) next set to be applied, ignoring other Situations.

Seems like it would be relable, and very customizeable.
