This is now supported in Locale 1.0. To add multiple conditions of the same type, simply long-press on the Add Condition button.
Locale 1.0 is available on the Android Market today in countries that support paid apps. Full release notes are here: http://www.twofortyfouram.com/notes.html

This has been implemented by the third party SMS Auto Respond Plug-in, which is available on the Android Market. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.suttco.locale.telephony.sms

After discussing this with Google, it is clear that third party apps will not be given access to modify the home screen.
Adding and removing widgets on the home screen is only something that the Android OS itself is allowed to do.
raynerape commented ·
Not at all. I am not asking for special UI rewriting of Android. Scenes is about saving presets of homescreen configuration such as widgets and shortcuts. What I suggest is adding and removing shortcuts and widgets per item, which is much more customizable and usable.

AUTOMATIC BACKUP/RESTORE
Locale has automatic backup and restore using the cloud-based backup mechanism in Android 2.2 or later. There are no configuration options within Locale—it just works! To use this feature, simply make sure that backup/restore is enabled by going to the Android Settings and verifying that Backup and Restore is enabled. (This option might be in a different place on different devices. With Android 2.2, it can be found under Android settings → Privacy. With Android 4.0, it can be found under Android settings → Backup & reset). Whenever Locale is uninstalled and reinstalled, the device is factory reset, or you upgrade to a new device, your Locale situations will be automatically restored. If there are no options for backup and restore under the Android Settings, then the device does not support automatic backup and restore.
Since backups are tried to a Google account, be sure to… more

I agree with Carter that Backups should be implemented only when they can be implemented properly. Therefore I suggest the following features for backup functionality:
- Backup files should carry version used to create them.
- Backup Data convert plugins can be developed and maintained by first- or third-party. Locale should simply allow that when a backup is imported, a backup data convert plugin can be called to chew the data. The backup data convert plugin can read the version of the Backup, knows the current version and should be able to convert or strip uncompatible and deprecated conditions.

Allow third party applications to add new Locale rules using intents. This will allow third party apps to automatically add default rules useful for novice and casual users (i.e. an app that can be launched via Locale can automatically set Locale to launch it at certain times, i.e. apk backuper, etc.). Precaution should be taken against dangerous rules implemented by third party apps – all rules added by third party apps should be manually approved within Locale before activated (i.e. they are added as deactivated rules, and must be manually activated to work).
raynerape commented ·
Is it completely duplicate? Is the ability of third party apps able to import rules in Locale also a duplicate at the other request?

While an interesting idea that might save some time during data entry, this isn’t feasible. For consistency’s sake, it doesn’t make sense to only allow locations to be created this way. A web-based user interface would need to be created for every condition and setting type. With plug-in conditions and settings that would be very difficult to manage. Locale is a mobile app, and I think we should keep it that way :).
I believe the underlying issue here is that the Locale interface isn’t as efficient as you would like it to be? So if anyone has other ideas to improve the efficiency of the interface on the phone, please let us know.
From within Locale, you can also search for locations by name/address, which is likely what one would do from within a web browser anyway. So how much more efficient would a web-based interface really be?

An online portal is not needed. All Locale needs is internal web server with HTML frontend that is accessible by tyrning the server on when on WiFi and accessing an IP"port from a same WiFi network connected computer. Many iPhone apps use such interfaces to allow users to upload data to their phone apps.

As of Locale 1.0.2, use of GPS is now implicitly configurable. As long as ALL location conditions are greater than 2,000 meters in size, Locale will not attempt to use GPS to determine location.
raynerape commented ·
I think it would be best if we could define locations that do not require GPS and are okay with network location. Iff GPS recognizes us to be within such area, it switches to much less frequent polling for GPS and frequent polling for network location. If we lose Network location, it switches back to GPS.

Scenes in HTC Sense is a private API, which means that third party apps like Locale cannot access it.
HTC has launched a new developer API for Sense UI devices at http://www.htcdev.com/
Unfortunately, these APIs are extremely limited and do not allow developers access to more advanced features such as Scenes.

I am planning to buy HTC Hero myself, so this would be amazing thing for me.

An interesting idea!
The design of Locale is that it is supposed to run in the background and handle things for the user automatically. The goal is that the user shouldn’t be seeing the Locale UI during the day.
I think this means we have a new app idea!
raynerape commented ·
Oh, yes, Voice-activation and Voice-to-text would be awesome. I could program my Locale to query me for a short comment on my day, then feed that comment as text to my favourite diary app without me having to manually launch that diary app by hand and then recording the data. Given how apps work via intents on Android platform, this can be so big it is enormous.

The Locale portion of this request is completed. Locale supports plug-in conditions in version 1.0.
Now we should encourage the developers of PicPush to implement this functionality.

This is a setting private to the GMail (or other email application). For Android security reasons, Locale cannot change other applications private settings.
One alternative would be to switch to the K9 email client. It offers a Locale plug-in to manage some of the email settings. You might follow up with the developer of K9 and see if he would implement this additional setting for this plug-in.

This could be implemented using the Locale Skim Internet Plug-in condition (although it is currently only available in countries that support paid apps…)

Marking as completed, as this is implemented by the third-party Ping.fm Plug-In.

Can Locale send eMail? If yes, ytou can already Ping.fm / HelloTXT / Pixelpipe without problems. They all support email gateways.

Very useful. It should differentiate between dialed, accepted, missed calls.
